Do-It-Yourself: Self-Service in Next Generation of Libraries |
Self-service is everywhere in our daily
life from gas stations to banks to grocery stores with the aim to
satisfy an increasing trend of independent consumer. Libraries in
next generation are undoubtedly no exception. In fact, with the advanced
UHF RFID (Ultra High Frequent Radio Frequency Identification) technologies
and integrated LMS (Library Management System), the Library Self-Service
is changing the way libraries do business in juggling efficient library
material management with better service delivery to the patrons and
offering richer library experience to the patrons.
Libraries throughout the world are continually challenged by tighter budgets, capped staffing and increased circulation and materials management. Integration of LMS and various UHF RFID hardware devices, library information including circulation data, library item data and staff data is instantaneous updated in the system, delivering the benefits of information accuracy, reliability and accessibility during the library hours. To staff, a full automation library environment offers the capability to handle multiple tasks in the shorter time and it transforms the role of staff from operator to "Information Concierges", who meet and greet patrons. To patrons, self-service devices create the new library experience which offers more privacy and efficiency throughout the check-in/out operation. A more modern-looking library with various self-service applications will be attractive to the patrons, especially young school children, who often love the new machines and self-service machines can look positively futuristic. HKC's new UHF RFID Library Solution offers multiple choices of self-service applications, including stocktake solution, self check-in/out kiosk, 24-hour book drop and book sorter with the benefits for both staff and patrons. In the case of the Attorney General Chambers, Singapore (AGC) Library Project, the stocktaking handheld has dramatically high performance to fasten the operation for 30,000 books within a day (or less). In the library project of Hang Seng Management College, the self check-in/out station with friendly user interface fasten the operation speed and save patrons waiting time a lot. In Central China Normal University, the librarians could focus more on delivering the better level of customer service to patrons with our advanced book sorter machine connected with 24-hour book drop facility, which not only offers service during non-library hours, but also reduces the manual sorting efforts. Without doubt, HKC's innovative library self-service devices such as self check-in/out kiosk (All-in-One Kiosk), 24-hour book drop and book sorter are catering the developing trend of the new generation of library which offers a more user-friendly and attractive library environment.
